[Listen] [Discover] – Harlem – [Thrash-Trash-Punk/Indie]
Next week (April 6th) sees the release of “Hippies”, the second album by Harlem, an Austin three-piece by way of Nashville. Their thrash-trash-punk is getting a shitload of people excited, and rightly so. They played about 783 shows at SXSW this year and came away from it as one of the highlights of the whole festival, so check out a couple of their songs below and see what all the fuss is about yourself. Also have a peek at the two videos, one is a live performance of “Someday Soon” and the other is for “Witchgreens”, the opening track from their first album “Free Drugs”.

[Watch] – New Video By Janelle Monae – Tightrope
I first heard of Janelle Monae a couple of years ago when she released her EP “Metropolis: The Chase Suite” and I’ve pretty much only had those five songs to listen to for more than two years. Even back then there was a load of excitement about her and it’s a testament to her potential to see that the buzz stayed with her for more than two years without releasing anything else.
Well, the time us upon us where she’s readying her debut album “The Archandroid” that’s dropping on May 18th.
Now you can see the video to “Tightrope”, the single she released a few weeks ago with Big Boi from Outkast. You can also listen to “Cold War”
[Listen] [Download] – New Twin Sister EP – Color Your Life
Twin Sister are a five-piece band based in Brooklyn who make insatiably catchy experimental pop music, drowned in atmosphere, with singer Andrea being loosely compared to a Bjork and Regina Spektor love-child. They released a four-song EP back in 2008 called “Vampires With Dreaming Kids” but have unfortunately gonna pretty much unnoticed until recently.
They played at SXSW a couple of weeks ago and got a lot of people talking, and now they’ve released their new EP “Color Your Life” as a free download, or you can pre-order it on Vinyl or CD from their label’s site. Also watch the pretty pretty pretty colourful video for “#6″.
Below is:
- “The Other Side Of Your Face”
- “Lady Daydream”
- “Milk & Honey”
- “All Around And Away We Go”
- “Galaxy Plateau”
- “Phenomenons”

[Listen] [Discover] – BRAHMS – [Electro-Rock]
Remember that huge SXSW post I made a couple of weeks ago where I uploaded hundreds of songs by bands and artists appearing at this year’s festival? Nah I didn’t think so, but I do, and one of the things I remember about it as I was listening to all of the songs and writing down bands that caught my attention and then marking bands that I really liked with multiple asterisks, was that I had placed exactly three asterisks next to the name “BRAHMS”.
Yeah you read that right; THREE ASTERISKS. Just take that in for a second. ***
That was only based on one song, and that one song is only one out of four that they have, but they do have three members; Eric Lyle Lodwick, Drew Montag Robinson, and Michael Cale Parks.
The song in question was “Toward The Ghost”, a thunderous electro-rock rabble that found itself being repeated for days on end, that was until I found their other three songs. The other three are just as good and thankfully they’re planning a (tentative) summer LP release.
You can get your hands on all of their songs by registering for their mailing list, or by going here. There are also a couple of videos that they did for BigUglyYellowCouch a few weeks ago (who have had ARMS, Phantogram, and Class Actress to name a few play on their couch).
You’ll wanna keep tabs on these guys because they’re going places, big places. Fast.

[Listen] [Download] – The Notorious XX – Notorious B.I.G. vs The XX [Mashup]
Charlie over at Wait What spent three weeks on this mashup, traveled 26,542 miles, worked 116 hours at his day job, tweeted 41 times, made 26 new Facebook friends, danced for 17 hours, snowboarded 5 mountains, celebrated 5 birthdays, took 2 trips to the hospital, found out his favourite author passed away, and ended up with 11 tracks of probably the most minimalistic and haunting rap mashups you’ll hear for quite some time. You’ll only be doing yourself a disservice by not giving it a thorough listening to.
He released the whole album as a free download, but you can check out the entire thing below or download it for yourself from his site. due to copyright reasons he’s been asked to remove all known traces of the songs from his site and I’m sure I’ll get my DMCA soon, but until then, enjoy.
