The Chillwave “movement” that blew up in 2009 is still going strong, many of the artists who (excuse the pun) rode that wave are still enjoying the success and have only gained momentum. It’s made way for a host of other acts to get some recognition for their hard work and excellent sound.
One such band is Bye Bye Blackbird from San Francisco, a one-man-band (Mikey Sanders) recorded, but live is joined by Austin Woods and Sobbi who are needed to bring the multi-layered and smooth sound to the live setting. Throughout the debut “Happy High EP” are waves of sonic ambiance, dream-pop, chilled grooves, and vocals dripping with reverb. I’ve had this on repeat literally for the last two hours.
I spoke to Mikey on MySpace and he told me I could post the entire EP for you to listen to as well as his latest single “Pure”, a tripped-out celestial being of a song. He plans to release an album in mid-July on a limited vinyl run of 300 copies, so watch out for that (it won’t last long). Also watch the video by Imaginary Animal for “So Sorry, Girl” and head over to his Bandcamp page to hear a cover Modest Mouse’s “Float On”.
