Based in New York, Cilla K. worked with Junius Bervine from N.E.R.D and had David Patillo from Flow NY to produce her debut album “Fine Line”. Her flow between genres in a single song is a fine line, flitting from Hip-Hop to Soul and back again within the blink of an eye, or from Jazz to R ‘n’ B in the beat of a heart.
Her genre blending will no doubt lead to comparisons with Janelle Monae but they’re two different elements, Cilla standing on her own with personal and heavy lyrics and the soul of Lauryn Hill. Rolling marching band drums and some of the best funky bass lines this side of Wild Cherry give the album a refreshing sound and one you can get behind repeatedly.
She was kind enough to send me her album but even though I can’t give the whole thing to you guys she was even kinderer to let me give you three songs to listen to. She plans to do a tour this summer, a collaboration, and release the video for “Easy To Love”. Busy summer ahead.
