…which moment would you choose and why?
It’s not really much of a secret that I’m an insanely huge fan of The Beatles and I don’t think there’s anyone before or since who’ve changed music and culture in such a hugely profound way. The moment in time that I’d go back to would be just before, during, and after the moment that John Lennon and Paul McCartney were introduced to each other at St. Peter’s Church Rose Queen garden fete in Woolton, on July 6th 1957. John was 17 and was playing with his band The Quarrymen when Paul arrived in the middle of them playing their second set of songs. Afterwards a mutual friend introduced them to each other, they spoke for a few minutes and then Paul played showed them how he tuned his guitar and played a couple of songs for them.
If they hadn’t met when they did, I think the chances of them meeting each other further down the road would’ve been slim, so to witness them being introduced as teenagers, shaking hands, talking to each other, watching Paul play them songs, and me knowing what just happened, how poignant those few minutes were going to be is something that fascinates me. To them it was nothing, just meeting some other kid who played the guitar and then going about their business, John going back up on stage and Paul going home. They had no idea they were about to change the world.
It was only a couple of weeks later that John asked Paul to join The Quarrymen and so began (arguably) the most prolific, inspirational, successful, and innovative writing and musical partnerships in history. Their first ever recording together was a cover of Buddy Holly’s “That’ll Be The Day”, still under the name of The Quarrymen and the b-side was an original song written by Paul and George called “In Spite Of All The Danger”, you can hear them both below.
