The problem with chillwave, as with pretty much any genre of electronic-based music, is the sheer amount of it being made by people with Macintosh computers everywhere. If you work for a large music blog or magazine, and you accept music submissions, I do not envy the amount of programmed mediocrity you have to wade through to discover the interesting bits.
There are, occasionally, interesting bits that find their way onto the radar, and Christian AIDS is one such bit. Hailing from Manchester, this mysterious duo make a haunting batch of dubstep-inspired witch house/chillwave that seems to pair well with altered mental states.
That is not to say that this is party music, because it’s more cerebral than that. Every track is lined with atmospheric synth, and upon that the real sound is built. What sits atop those synths runs the gamut from reverbed original vocals to samples of Death From Above 1979 echoing off the concrete walls. It’s a fresh take on industrial electronica and it is more than a little bit creepy. Christian AIDS’ multi-tiered sound is perfect for that half-hour you are stuck on the train, out on a bike ride, or couch-locked in your garage at 1am.
