New Hip-Hop this year has been pretty solid so far.
I’m not talking mainstream shite like Lil Wayne and Drake, I’m talking about up-and-coming underground guys like J. Nolan and Classic, both of which are bringing something fresh and original to Hip-Hop, a genre with so much to give yet so regularly squanders by focusing on guns, bitches, and bling. Where Classic differs from J. Nolan is his instrumentation and creation of an overall sound on each jam (and that’s not a diss on J. Nolan).
“Rocka Salute” is a fiercely-spat track that sounds like an infuriated Classic is backed by an equally infuriated Sleigh Bells, hitting up a distorted mic with a huge, fuzz-driven bassline that tries to keep up with his speed and wouldn’t sound out of place on “Treats”. From what I’ve heard (and that’s all of the three songs below) this guy’s onto something with his mix of electro-synths, distorted punk-like basslines, appropriate (and brief) use of auto-tune, and giant chest-shaking beats.
You can download each of the songs below, but they can also be had from his Bandcamp page for free and at a higher bitrate (so I’d suggest getting them from there).
