Tuesdays excite me.
Not only does it begin with a “T” (one of my favourite letters, not far behind “F” and “ranky B Rockafeller”) but Mike over at The Big Beat posts a New Tunes Tuesday mix of 12 or so songs that are….well new, and I’ve yet to be disappointed by the variety and consistently good tunes he’s had in them. That’s where I first heard of Colleen Green, he’d posted her song “Worship You” and so I downloaded it and kept it to the side to write up a post on her.
That was only from one song, so when I listened to her free, self-released-on-CD-R thinger that she’s been giving out at shows, it really took me by surprise. One thing to note though is that the volume level on some songs seems to be skewed, with some of them having to be turnd up to hear it better and when the next one kicks in you have to turn it back down. Or maybe I’m just getting old (can people in their 20s be considered “old”?), or maybe it’s her brand of skuzzy, Lo-Fi, DIY bedroom Beach-rock that’s perforating my eardrums. Who the fuck knows.
Chances are you’ll compare her to Best Coast or Beach Fossils, and yeah I can see that, they even talk about getting stoned all the time on Twitter, but Colleen just doesn’t incessantly go on about her cat. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed Best Coast’s album, but for me some of the songs were indistinguishable from one to the next, and with Colleen she takes that Lo-Fi signal and blends it with The Breeders and some kind of twisted, optimistic modern-day Joy Division bass lines to make each song have that same but different sound. It’s the same, but different!
She released an eight-song EP on cassette that was limited to 50 copies, as well as the below CD-R that I mentioned earlier. You can listen to it and download it all below, or click this link she has on her MySpace page to get it all in a handy ZIP file. If you wanna hear the song the song that got me hooked, give big Mike’s post a gander.
