It’s funny how little things can please you so much. I spent my early years in London, living very near the Elephant & Castle (in the London Borough of Southwark, fact fans) and have many happy memories of there. Imagine my pleasure then when I discovered that a new band had made a video for their new single around that very place.
Flash Fiktion have based themselves around the Walworth Road, far from the bustling districts of London hipsterdom so that they can focus on their desire to “…destroy what’s going on in the mainstream.” As far as they’re concerned music shouldn’t have to be diluted to be popular, something I think we can all agree on in this day and age of manufactured pap brought to you by the latest freak factor “talent” show.
So who is this band that so far has released just one single, last August’s double A-side ‘Leni/Science Of Sleep’ (a track that was played on Zane Lowe’s The Reaction Record segment)? Flash Fiktion are Matt (vocals, guitar, keyboard, samplers), Ollie (vocals, guitar) and Dan (drums). Matt and Ollie have been together for 2 years but it wasn’t until a chance meeting with Dan, a Croatian schooled in Latin and Afro-Cuban percussion, that the band’s sound really began to form.
Having recorded “Leni” themselves they’ve called in some co-conspirators to work on “Capsules Of Sun”, in particular Alex ‘Lexxx’ Dromgoole, a studio engineer who’s recently mixed records for the likes of Wild Beasts and Crystal Castles and it’s really paid off.
It’s a catchy little pop number that easily knocks the manufactured crap for six. Matt’s infectious vocals are backed by Dan’s excellent drumming and a superb electronic hook that gets the toes tapping. It ends on a beautiful musical high reminiscent of some of Britpop’s finest that leaves you wanting more.
I’ve included both the audio and video versions for your enjoyment!
