[Introducing] – Fuji Kureta

Fuji Kureta

One of the things I love about writing for this site is the fact that I get to listen to new music on a daily basis. I also love the fact that I just never know when I pop into the inbox what that music is going to be or where it’s going to come from. Sure we get our fair share of American/English garage/rock/punk bands and some of them are pretty damn good (and they make it to the site).

But what really excites me though is when you see tags telling you that the music is different or that it has come from somewhere where English isn’t the first language and the latter is what happened here.

Fuji Kureta are an electronica duo from Istanbul in Turkey. Formed in August 2008, they’re singer Deniz Öztürk and composer Sahin Kureta and their lyrics are in French and English. They class their music as something between “…Lali Puna and Little Dragon…”. Having won an award in 2009 (Best Electronica Act award – Miller Music Factory Contest) and after performing at various festivals and clubs, they released an EP “Sweets” in 2010.

I’ve been playing it to death so thought I’d share it with you here. It’s an interesting collection of trip-hop style tracks reminding me in places of Bjork and Portishead. They have also been compared to Lamb which is never a bad thing. My favourite, and I think, the more interesting, track is “Technically Gypsy”. From it’s opening strings to the slightly edgier vocal style to the backing chants, it sounds like a folk tune from the past brought up to date by the band’s arrangements. I’d be interested to hear what you think.

You can download the EP from their website along with their new album “See Through”.
