When I was 14 years old I got a little Casio keyboard for my birthday. Dreams of being rich and famous saw me get as far as learning to play a couple of simple kids ryhmes. Strangely there didn’t seem room in the charts for vital reimaginings of this genre of music so my dreams fell by the wayside.
Drew Harris first started making music when he was 14 years old too. He stuck with it though and spent the next few years of his life playing in different bands (some bad, some half decent) before branching out on his own at 17. It wasn’t until his musical tastes changed in 2009 when he discovered electro/dance music and acts like Digitalism, Justice, and Daft Punk that he realised what he should be doing.
Alongside studying at University he was soon recording his own tracks, and before long Germany Germany was born. Ask him why Germany, Germany and he’ll tell you it’s a long story. Maybe next time we’ll fit it in. He’s had a few free LPs out and managed to get a live show under his belt, and now he’s getting ready to release his next album, “Adventures”. The two tracks we’ve got for you here are from that album.
I happened to be listening to these as the sun streamed through my window and they were the perfect tracks to be playing.
“Take Your Time” is a bright little number, opening with a distorted vibration over a piano. Multi layered without being busy, the opening electro theme reminds me of my casio and the refrain carries on throughout with a pleasing synth backing. The squealy guitar sound is an eBow on a guitar run through a circuit-bent Boss DS-1 “…trying to nail Brian Eno’s “digital guitar” sound”.
“Reflections” started life as a musical number but he was on the bus and kept making eye contact with a girl in the reflection of the window and so the vocals were born. A dreamy, dance track with a vocal sample by Jessica Morgan from one of his earlier songs.
Pretty damn good for a guy still in full time school, I’m eagerly awaiting his album.
