It doesn’t quite make sense to have an introduction piece on a band as their second post on the site, but this is Listen Before You Buy, we roll all unconventional, likes. As I mentioned in my post about their new video I’ve been meaning to make this post for months now and it was always put on the back-burner, so can someone please apologise to the band because I know they must be gutted by this.
Grouplove (formerly just the search engine-perplexing Group) are a five-piece from all over the shop (London, New York, L.A.) and are now based in L.A. after having formed on the Island of Crete (yeah the one in the Mediterranean). Hopefully they’re now on the way to recording their debut album but they released their debut EP early in 2010 to a huge amount of excitement to everyone who heard them. Unfortunately not enough people did hear them but if I can shine my tiny cockroach-sized light on them it can only help.
When you hear their EP-opening “Colours” you have no choice but to do exactly what they did in the video for it, and that’s jump and yell and scream and dance like you’re a motherfucking Native American scalping a whitey. The EP is a five-song jumper, tweaked up on either too much caffeine, too much Speed, or just too much love and life (can you have too much of that?), it’s a jovial affair laced with optimism, striking melodies and lots of yelling (the heart of passion). Multiple times does singer Christian Zucconi’s voice reach breaking point, letting you know he’s giving it his all, and on “Naked Kids” they borrow the harmony for John Lennon‘s “Merry X-mas (War Is Over)” that fits perfectly as it opens and closes.
2011 could very well be a monumental year for the band, and if you’re looking for somewhere to file these guys, how about on their own as a hybrid between The Thermals, Modest Mouse, and Pixies. Below you can hear “Getaway Car” from their EP (that was also used on the show “How To Make It In America”) as well as debut single “Colours” that you can grab as a 7″ single that’s limited to 500 (collector’s item in a few years).
