Sometimes your day starts in a normal fashion, alarm clock, breakfast, journey to work, humdrum day… Sometimes though something happens to break up the monotony and today that something happened. Herr Styler arrived.
I have to admit that when a band describes itself as “…an enigmatic and rather secretive duo (originally from Italy but living in Paris) who’s (sic) identity has so far been kept under wraps…” I do worry that what I’m about to hear may very well have been put together by a couple of civil servants that have just received the latest release of eJay Dance but with these guys I think we’ve got the real deal. They use synths, basses, kick drums, snare drums, steel drums, guitars, wolves (more of them later), saxophones, pencils and almonds(!) to create their sound.
Primarily remixers working with the likes of Minitel Rose, Amari, Supermen Lovers and Caro Emerald, they’re now spreading their sense of mischief to a whole new audience.
“Jack” is taken from their new EP “Double Sided Paper” released in January 2011 and is remixed by Fare Soldi. The EP itself is supposed to be a record about Ferdinand de Saussure (a Swiss linguist, widely considered to be one of the fathers of 20th-century linguistics – for those interested!) and the ages of human beings.
“Jack” opens the EP and is the naughty toddler stage that symbolises childhood as a big hide and seek game between kids and wolves. Can’t actually recall many times I hid from wolves myself but I have to admit that the track works. From the opening beats and distorted vocals that lay the foundation for what’s to come, to when the wolves show up at around the 36 sec mark (yes really!) it’s an infectious little number that I have no doubt would look and sound amazing in a rammed nightclub. My only complaint would be that it ends too abruptly.
Stand up, turn up the volume and let your body loose as you recall those heady 3-year-old days when you could dance with no shame.
