[Introducing] – Icky Doome

Do you have a sub-woofer? You may want to be careful. Icky Doome‘s beats are as deep and dark as a treacle sink-hole, and if you don’t watch out you might just get sucked in. Still, it happened to me, and it’s not such a bad experience. In fact, other than pissing off your neighbours by shaking their favourite toy dog portrait off the wall (Did this actually happen to me? Maybe.), it’s pretty great.

Icky is presumably not his actual first name, but it’ll have to do. Actually, if his Twitter account is to be believed, he’s a black cat. It’s not impossible, I suppose. Whatever, he’s a one man/felis operation based out of Brooklyn, NY; keep your eyes open for the occasional DJ set if you’re in the area … He started off more in the rock line of work, but has since moved more into electronic territory, where he knocks out superb IDM with some refreshingly thoughtful sound design.

I encountered him courtesy of the BBC‘s Tom Robinson, who played the excellent “Epikoininoun” – try spelling that in a hurry. That said, I’m told it’s not a very good representation of where he’s at musically at the moment. His trajectory is “heavier, murkier, and darker”. That’s quite an exciting prospect, given that it’s already pretty heavy, murky, and dark. Well, no, that’s not quite true – it’s not murky. There are some murky elements, perhaps, but the tracks as a whole are spacious and engrossing. Now, though, we can look forward to some big, harsh bass-lines (as opposed to big, smooth bass-lines), which is a sure-fire route to my heart.

Don’t expect anything in the immediate future, though, as his main project for the moment is production work for fellow New Yorker Bonnie Baxter, who composes similarly eery and enjoyable electronica as Shad[]wB[]x. Still, with her album due out this month, we can hopefully look forward to more Doome soon. In the meantime, check out one of his DJ mixes, which includes a pretty impressive roster of talent from Radiohead to Amon Tobin. You may be interested to know that the technical term for the musical territory between those two is “Awesome”.

Icky Doome may not be the most radio-friendly producer you’ll encounter, but I for one am very excited to see where he’s headed next. At this point I would probably follow him into the depths of hell, and it sounds like that might just be where we’re headed. Cool. You can stream “Epikoininoun” below, or follow the links for more from both him and Shad[]wB[]x.
