Axel Willner AKA The Field recently came out with a record full of sweeping micro-samples that have become associated with him like bread with butter. The very appropriately titled “Looping State Of Mind” creates a state of infinite playback with no end in sight and it’s the first thing that came to mind when I began listening to Jens Lindahl. I had left his song “PVC” on repeat and was pleasantly surprised at how well it came full circle … and back again and again and again. This kind of subtle sampling with multilayered percussion is extremely pleasant mood music. Atmospheric, it is a wallpaper that comes to life in its surroundings, as opposed to just playing a minor character.
Jens Lindahl is an electronic musician from Copenhagen, Denmark. His beats are heavy, I imagine seeing him live and already feel my pant legs shaking from the bass, which is so deep as it is just coming through my speakers. This ever-present heaviness nicely plays backdrop to the now raw-sounding blips and reverberations.
Sampling individual instruments like the sax and playing the keys on top of the standard house beat in “PVC” manages to make the song both danceable, spacey and different. It brought to mind “Keep Me There“ by Nicolas Jaar, which plays with similar themes. The blanket of bass that is a constant presence creates this noir landscape that has all the energy to make me walk a little faster, but also a calmness that sedates and mellows the boring calamity that can plague so much drug-addled house music.
Like the best of the electronic producers out there, Lindahl can do a mean remix, making some songs better than they are without his crowning touch. And he has the ability to throw a guest vocalist into the mix to stellar results, as in the track “My Inner Space” featuring Eva Esther. And … he has a great head of hair. C’mon, Look at it!
