[Introducing] – Jonwayne

While their names are phonetically similar, Jonwayne bears no resemblance to the John Wayne.  Just wanted to clear that up.

Jonwayne, rapper/producer, recently released his new album, “Bowser”, which is a mind-wrecking glimpse into the future of beats,” so says his album label.  Agreed.  While his style is an obvious comparison to that of Dan Deacon’s, Jonwayne’s tracks seem to tell a story.  While Dan Deacon often throws the whole kitchen sink at you in one track (just listen to “Trippy Green Skull”), Jonwayne is strategic and deliberate in his trippy beats.

We all know the story of the Mario Bros. and the evil King Bowser Koopa, who kidnaps the lovely Princess Peach in his attempt to take over Mushroom Kingdom.  Bowser, the character, is big, and scary with chunky turtle-like features, which the album, “Bowser” seems to mimic seemlessly, especially in the track “Be Honest.”

“Be Honest” is dark, sadistic, and evokes the very images of fireballs blazing and lava eruptions.  However, it’s matured – the melody peaks your curiosity and adds a level of suspense that can take you the depths below or to the princess.  The ending, alone, leaves you on the edge of a cliff (or your seat) wondering what comes next – with the feeling that just one note can tip you in either direction.

Blowing the minds of the Los Angeles underground scene, Jonwayne also released “Remixes Are Things” EP, which included a remix of Gucci Mane’s “Running Back.”  Listen to the sick tracks below.
