[Introducing] – Jordan Bolton

Can you remember what you were doing when you were 18? Obviously if you’re 18 or thereabouts I’m going to guess the answer is yes. For me though, 18 was quite a few years ago (no I’m not going to say how many, if you’re that interested you can find out through one of my many online profiles!) but one thing I can definitely remember me not doing was making amazing music.

This guy, Jordan Bolton, is 18 and is making amazing music. He’s a solo artist out of Manchester, England who spent the first half of 2010 exploring new music and recording a demo. The demo was one of differences, in that he learned to play different instruments and write in different styles all influenced by the different types of music he was listening to.

I’ve got his second EP, “Silver Age” for you here, which has Bolton finding his musical feet. Playing all instruments (except drums, filled in by Chris Forsey of Manchester band ‘I, Said The Spy’) and performing all vocals, when I had my first listen I couldn’t believe that someone this young could put out something so assured.

Taking influence from artists such as Beck, TV On The Radio and Saul Williams and sounding so much older than his 18 years, the first two tracks, “Control” and “Black and Grey” are beautiful indie pop classics with sing-along hooks that stick in the brain.  My favourite track however is “Lull”, a grittier affair with a pounding intro and an almost sea shanty feel. Showing a different side to his vocals but still creating a catchy number, this demonstrates that his desire to experiment is one of the things that’s going to keep him interesting.

I’m really looking forward to his 3rd EP which should be out sometime this year and if I get a chance to get to Manchester I’ll definitely catch him in a show.
