JOYWAVE has undergone quite the transformation lately. They’ve grown in numbers (3 to 5) and in sound, which fits their name perfectly. Their newest single, “Golden State” is light, fun, and, well, sounds joyful. Drawing influence from Phoenix and MGMT, JOYWAVE distinguishes themselves by infusing grunge with pop, and it works.
“Golden State” is one of those songs that you can, and will likely, listen to on repeat. I must have listened to it 10 times, finding a new section that intrigued me. Don’t let the name fool you, the lyrics don’t exactly make you feel all warm in fuzzy inside, and if you’ve just broken up with someone, you should blast this song and sing along – I bet it can be quite cathartic.
With only two songs posted on their website, both of which are quite different, I’m interested to hear more. Their demo, “Traveling at the Speed of Light” reminds me of Broken Bells and Gayngs – see, very different. I hope they can bring cohesion and focus to their album because it could really be phenomenal.
