Now come on, when you open up an email and it tells you that the music has been created “as an electronic ‘thank you’ card to those who have dedicated countless hours to provide an opportunity for independent music to be discovered by those who seek it out”, i.e. us bloggers, then you’ve got to feature it surely? Well if it’s absolutely dire then of course you don’t. Luckily I didn’t have that problem with Leann Grimes.
Leann is the alter ego of Shane Conerty (who’s also in Now You See Them), who spent the winter sampling some of the great indie bands he has discovered via music blogs (and I’m sure we’re one of them!) and putting together a remix album. Bands that are featured on the album include Avi Buffalo, The Decemberists, The Head and The Heart and Deerhunter amongst others.
My favourite track is “Memory Noise” that samples “Memory Boy” by Deerhunter (here’s one for our very own Frank, I’m sure that sample sounds a little like bagpipes). It’s one of those happy anthem like tunes that lifts the mood when you hear it and I’ve played it quite a few times. The album as a whole though is a really interesting concept, away from the usual “Try This” compilation, giving you teasers to the tracks instead. As Shane himself hopes, “… anyone who enjoys this record seeks out and supports the bands who inspired these tracks.” Many of them can be found here at Listen Before You Buy.
Shane also provided us with his latest track “Private Baller (Buffet)” which was about 15 hours old when I wrote this, so you lucky people are some of the first to hear it! Enjoy!
