[Introducing] – Lubec

I was intrigued by Lubec because they recorded their debut EP on a tobacco farm. Now, I don’t know about you, but I find that to be pretty freaking awesome. Even more awesome, though, are the tunes found on the EP. Lubec’s music is, according to them, what would be considered as “sculpt-rock”.  I’m not exactly sure what that means, but what I do know is that they are making some awfully catchy and addicting tunes.

Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, the 4-piece is gearing up to release that EP, “Nothing Is Enough!”, on January 18th on the label The Acme Thunderer (also based in Richmond). The tracks are short, fun, glitzy and drenched in layers and layers of sonic noise and distortion. Lead singer, Eddie Charlton’s voice reminds me of a combination of Paul Smith of Maximo Park and Ross Millard of The Futureheads (Franky B note – they also have a bit of a Girls vibe going on too). This is kind of odd since those two are both British, but I’m not going to question it as it’s working really well for them.

On “Your Magic Wand”, Charlton sings with an unmistakable urgency that makes the whole thing one infectious jam. Featuring a chugging baseline, sludgy guitars and pounding drums, the song is certainly a lo-fi anthem of sorts. The song builds and builds and then explodes  into a crazy noise jam. Things slow down for a brief second and Charlton darkly states, “it’s the magic wand that binds us”. After he gets that thought out, the song builds up once again and continues on its loud and fuzzy mission. This is one of those songs that I can imagine myself listening to on repeat over and over again, just taking in everything it has to offer.

The band has announced a few East Coast dates throughout January and February and are planning on adding more throughout March, and below you can check out “Your Magic Wand”.
