I don’t make it a habit of actively seeking out acoustic pop music. I wouldn’t even consider it to be one of my top three favorite genres. I find most of it to be either too lazy to listen to, or too opinionated for me to enjoy. Still, I somehow end up finding some diamonds in the rough. These usually end up being the longest lasting albums in my musical rotation. Long after the dance pop and new wave numbers have lost their flavor, artists like Lucy Rose still remain as fresh as they did upon first listen.
Lucy is one of the newest gems to come out of the UK singer songwriter collective. At first listen, quick parallels will be drawn to artists like Laura Marling, Lisa Hannigan, and Feist. However, for me, her vocal qualities trump all of them. Upon first listen to “Middle Of The Bed” I was stricken with her smooth as silk tone. Not to mention the writing, which is thoughtful and damn catchy.
If anyone can say they were a motivated self starter, it’s Lucy. She’s actually more of a textbook definition of successful independent musician. She first gained notoriety as a supporting act prior to her current success, having worked closely with Jack Steadman, and Bombay Bicycle Club in general, for quite a while. Going back as far as 2010′s “Flaws“, she has contributed backing vocals on a number of various tracks.
To date, three tracks have been offered off her yet-to-be-scheduled full length release. My favorite is still “Middle Of The Bed“, but the current single “Red Face” is a close second. If these releases are a sign of material to come, she should have no problem landing a major label deal, and hopefully reaching her key demographic here in the US.
