[Introducing] – MAGIC EYE

“Hey dudes. Listen to us. If you do not like us, then you are not cool.” Well, it seems that for the first time in my life I’m cool, because I do quite like MAGIC EYE [though they could afford to lose the caps lock. No excuse for that.] The band describe themselves as ‘Aquarium Rock’, a genre that, unsurprisingly, has no other matches on soundcloud. This is not, however, some pioneering new form of rock: Magic Eye offer breathy vocals and sparse, swirling guitars of a kind that we’ve heard many times before.

Still, familiarity is no bad thing when the music’s good, and on “Flamin’ Teenage” it certainly is. It’s a gentle, mature tune that recall tracks sung by Caroline Potter on Piano Magic’s “Low Birth Weight” [an absolutely masterful album that, if you haven't heard it, I strongly suggest you check out], albeit with admittedly less pretty vocals.

Perhaps the innovation of ‘Aquarium Rock’ is that the tracks are recorded underwater; certainly the production on some of Magic Eye’s tracks is so poor that you could believe that’s the case. But they’re a young band who show promise, their production seems to be getting better over time ["Flamin' Teenage" is their most recently uploaded track], and with an album and a casette release on New York label Animal Image Search brewing, they could be worth keeping an eye on. Check out “Flamin’ Teenage” below, and check out the band’s soundcloud page for three more tracks. Just don’t expect to be in production heaven.
