[Introducing] – Michael Kiwanuka

Are you wondering if we’ve just stepped into 1972? Are you about to pull out your bell bottoms, fringe jackets and grow your hair out in a true afro? Stop. While the music was pretty amazing in the 1970′s, the fashion trends are better left in the past. Michael Kiwanuka has a beautiful voice. I could just end the entry right there, but I’ll swoon a little bit more.

His voice is full-bodied and the epitome of soul. His music is a new spin on that of Bill Withers’s “Use Me” and Van Morrison’s “Moondance”. It’s surprising to hear Kiwanuka’s voice and lyrics and believe he’s only 21 years old. Kiwanuka was raised in England, parents immigrated from Uganda, and often times struggled to fit in. However, music seemed to be his outlet and his savior all at the same time. Upon learning that Jimi Hendrix was black, Kiwanuka began to believe in himself as a musician. Following his new found talent, he explored music with a veracity that yields what we now get to experience and enjoy.
