Austin, TX is regularly cited as the “live music capital of the world”. I was recently there myself, and I have to say it certainly does have an impressive array of venues, bands, and bars where you can ingest many different kinds of music. And I was there on a Monday night.
One of the bands coming out of Austin that have got me pretty excited right now are Modern Moonlight. The amount of information out there about them is scarce at best, The Onion’s AV Club have featured them once, but that’s about it. Here is what we do know about the band so far: the group is comprised of two brothers, Sam and Max Vandever, on guitars and vocals, drummer James Branch and keyboardist Jonathan Christ, who also plays in Austin’s Machine.
The first two songs they have released, which can be heard below, are a bit psychedelic and a bit garagey, and all good. “Doesn’t Bother Me” is clearly indebted to the psych scene happening in San Francisco, with a very Moon Duo-ish backing track, but with much more insistent, catchy vocals and a chorus! “You Can’t Break My Heart” is a less groovy affair, but no less interesting, recalling The Walkmen more than any psychedelic groups.
With an album on the way, it would be worth keeping your eyes out for Modern Moonlight in the coming months.
