[Introducing] – Old Tapes

Lisa Kribs and David Lee Rad used to DJ together but now, along with Lisa’s brother Michael, they’re bringing us synth-driven pop as Old Tapes. I say driven, but this music doesn’t exactly rattle along at any great pace. Old Tapes make soothing, almost ambient music, fit for swaying more than dancing. Most of the songs they’ve put together so far rest on simple, repeated vocal refrains from Lisa, whose slight voice provides the perfect point of contrast to those melancholy synths. This is especially true on “Farewell”, probably the best of their current batch of tunes.

“Queen”, with its jagged guitar and strong beat, is surprisingly aggressive, but regrettably Lisa’s vocals, still in mellow mode, feel a little lethargic here. Not so on “Got The Time”, though, which comes close to being an out and out dance track but stays pretty chilled, even at the breakdown around 2:30 in, and “Got The Time (LO-FI)”, a less beat-heavy version of the same tune, has a touch of Warpaint to it, with overdubbed vocal layers and deep, echoing instrumentation. I dig it.

You can dig it, and the other three tracks, with free downloads below. Also, look forward to a full EP from Old Tapes in the near future, which we’ll cover when it drops.
