[Introducing] – Paper Ibis

Paper Ibis

Growing up in the 80′s I had a steady stream of electro synth pop bands more than happy to release tracks for me to attempt the robot dance to. Greats like OMD, Kraftwerk, Gary Numan and Ultravox, to name but a few, introduced a whole generation to electronic music played via keyboards and drum machines.

It’s been interesting watching pop music in the years since, take this music and mould it to each successive generation’s own style until we get to today. Artists like LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip, La Roux and Lady Gaga each take the electro sound and make it their own, inspiring a whole new generation of future electro pop artists. So what about the future? Well the next new wave could start with bands like Paper Ibis.

Fresh out of Chapel Hill, NC, Noel Cody and Sarah Evert have been playing together since 2009 but released their debut EP this year. Noel is a classically-trained pianist with an electro-anything music obsession whilst Sarah used her theatre and classical singing experience to develop a unique vocal style. They approach everything with a DIY attitude and admit that the songwriting process is a creative jumble, but it really pays off.

“Let Light In” is the single off their eponymous EP and is a superb electro feast. Sarah’s vocals, sounding scarily like Kate Bush‘s in places, carry over a strident electronic bassline mixed with effects that make the track sound like it came fresh off the Blade Runner soundtrack. It sounds excellent when played loud I can tell you! Check out their Soundcloud page to hear the rest of the tracks on the EP.
