Poverty and the lack of culture is just as influential in breeding creativity as being cultured and well-off does. It gives people a way out, a desire to succeed at anything if it means they can escape their life of ennui.
Some of the greatest bands of all time have grown up with nothing other than a desire to leave their shitty town to find something else, something new, something meaningful, something worth living for. I’ve got no idea if Presents For Sally had that kinda life growing up or not, but when I was trying to find a picture of theirs to go with the post I found a few like the one above and it got me all thinky.
The music they make reminds me of some of the bands who came out of working class conditions in the U.K., with not much else to fill one’s life with other alcohol, music, or (proper, not American) football; Sex Pistols, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Oasis, Primal Scream, Arctic Monkeys, even The Beatles. Sure Morrissey had his books, but Manchester in the 80s wasn’t the greatest place on the planet to live and it sure as hell shaped his view on life and music.
With Presents For Sally they’ve utilised different parts from various bands and eras throughout the U.K. music scene over the last 25 years; Shoegaze from the 80′s, Lo-Fi grunge from the 90′s, ambient electronic twizzlers from the whole acid house deal of the late 80′s, and Punk guitar riffs from the late 70′s. Their debut album “A Touch Of Joy, A Touch Of Sadness” is out on November 22nd on CD and as a download via Laserghost.
