[Introducing] – RL Grime

Just in time for late-night-anything, this landed on my lap in the wee small hours of this morning/last night/whenever 12 hours ago was.

Scanning through some of the Twitter streams and RSS feeds I’d missed across the course of the day, my boy Riley over at The Leaving Scene had posted “Die 4 Me” by RL Grime (pronounced R. L. Grime, not Real Grime as I was initially calling him) along with a last-ditch plea for people to give it a listen.  The chances of me scanning over one of Riley’s posts and not listening were slim anyway, but instead of coming back to it and going and working on more important things, I gave it a click.

His description was that he found himself making facial gestures as he listened  to it, at one point his jaw even dropped and I’m right there with him.  It only took me about 20 seconds to be hooked and 15 minutes later I’ve listened to it three times, played through a couple of songs on his Soundcloud page, and dropped everything else to start writing this.  I realise that that sounds like a lot of hype, and I don’t want to hype something up too much but it’s rare for me drop everything just to write about new music 15 minutes after I discovered it.  I haven’t even looked at any information about the guy, other than that it’s a guy, but looking over Riley’s post and Live For The Funk‘s interview and mix with RL Grimes, I can tell you a few things.

Like I said, it’s a guy.  Secondly his name’s Henry Steinway and he’s from LA living in NYC, 20 years old, and I’m not sure I want to know much more.  I’m just slow-jamming in my chair to his music, a soulful smorgasbord of dirty Hip-Hop beats, high-pitched vocals reminiscent of a pre-pubescent boy being kicked in the balls as he inhales helium, polyurethane drops, synthetic waves, and hoards of idiosyncrasies you’d be best to discover, repeat, discover, repeat, discover, and repeat all by yourself.

Maybe most surprising of all is that fact that he remixed Rebecca Black’s “Friday” and made it half-way listenable.  That takes some motherfucking talent.  His EP “Clipz” is available as a free download and below you can hear a few cuts from it, including the one that got me hooked, “Die 4 Me”.
