[Introducing] – Robot Science

While I wouldn’t consider myself an electronica aficionado, like fellow LBYB writer Leisha, I do enjoy a good mix when I hear it.  This new artist, Robot Science, or Charlie Yin as he’s better known to his classmates, is a student at UC Berkley.  Yin sounds like your typical Chinese-American undergrad (despite being freakishly tall for an Asian, 6’2″), however, he’s got a whole other side to him that drops insanely inventive tracks.

I wouldn’t mind having him for a dormmate.  Need music to study?  Ask Yin to play “Plush.”  Need music to sleep?  Play the mellow track, “Shine.”  Having a party?  Turn up “Daggers.”

What peaked my interest (aside from our mutual love of “thick, sturdy, structurally sound sandwiches”) was Yin’s creativity by mixing traditional electronic beats with everyday noises – telephone key strokes, children playing, birds chirping – and throwing in some sounds that make you feel like you’re in a Mario Bros. video game.   On the music end, I hear Daft Punk, The Album Leaf and Justice influences but with a twist.

Yin likes to keep it real, claiming that a career in music for him is unlikely (hence his unyielding and studious nature that led him to study abroad in Taiwan).  I can’t predict the future, but if he keeps turning out albums like Good Luck and his debut album, Doodads, I wouldn’t rule out a career making music.  Press on, Yin…press on.  Check out all of his music on his Bandcamp page.  You can also listen to a remix he did of Toro Y Moi’s Talamak below.
