When I think of scattered trees I think of a global population with some serious respiratory problems.
When I think about the band called Scattered Trees I think “Why the fuck can I not get this song out of my head?”, and then I remember “Oh yeah, it’s fucking catchy that’s why!”. This Chicagoan six-piece first appeared on my radar back in October when Knox Road posted about them and I kept that post starred, always meaning to do a writeup about them sometime in the future. Well that future date is now in the present (and soon to be past).
The short but sweet selection of songs are a mix of undulated Indie-Pop gems, soulful windswept Folk ballads, crooning fuzz-fueled rocking handclapped-singalongs, mournful and apologetic laments of love, and a bass-driven and choir-sung cover of John Lennon‘s “Instant Karma” (complete with the wandering reverb that Lennon refused to record without). If you’re looking for comparisons, Jeff Tweedy doing Death Cab For Cutie/Iron & Wine covers wouldn’t be too far off.
When the band played CMJ this year they did so to around 25 people and were an apparent joy to see. With an album tentatively scheduled for an April 2011 release, the below song “Love And Leave” is a taster of how that album might just go.
Majestically. That’s how.
