Short, sweet, and to the point.
Easy tigers, I’m not talking about myself, although I am fairly short and my head does get all pointy at the top like Dan Aykroyd’s. I’m talking about Shimmering Stars from British Columbia, Canada. Whilst their sound is upbeat, harmonious, sunny, and can quench thirst at the drop of a hat, underneath there lies a dark and almost morose vein that rears its head in the lyrics. Words of loneliness, antipathy, violence and disdain are masked by said sound, a juxtaposition that’s worked well for other bands who may fall into the same pigeon hole (see Best Coast (to a point), Beach Fossils, Cults, and even Tennis).
Chances are you’ll compare them to those bands because of their Lo-Fi, garage-rock, and 50′s melodies, and it’s pretty much impossible to listen to any music these days without being able to compare it to someone else, I think those days might just be gone. For the foreseeable future I’ll have a liking for reverb-laden Dream-Pop, hewn from the shores of a beach or a dingy bedroom with a desire to one day record on the shore of that beach. Their 7″ single with four songs that run a total of….wait, let me add this up….7:03, is out on November 15th and that can be bought at Almost Musique (it’s limited to 500 though, so act fast).
Check out a couple of the songs from the 7″ below and a sad video that might make you cry.
