While I was going through LBYB’s SXSW list, I listened to the first few seconds of each track. If you can get me at “hello,” then I’m yours. All I needed to hear was that first bass drumbeat of Superhumanoids’ track “Persona”, and I knew I was going to like it. Then in walked that low garage guitar stroke, playing just what I wanted to hear – buttering me up. And then come the shoe-gaze vocals that go straight to the gut. I was officially a fan.
The rest of the song is just as good as the beginning, slowly building the tempo and harmonizing vocals that lure you in. For some reason, when I first heard “Persona”, the male vocals made me think of Jim Morrison, a good sign, but I also heard hints of Talking Heads and Arcade Fire.
This L.A.-based quartet – Carmeron Parkins, Sarah Chernoff, Max St. John, and Evan Weinerman - shows some range, with their latest single, “Malta” which distinguishes itself from “Persona”. ”Malta” mixes shoe-gaze vocals with electronic beats and a garage-rock feel, while “Persona” is more grounded and stripped down. I like how they describe their music – as helping to “kiss the doldrums away.” Truth.
The rest of their EP, “Parasite Paradise” is available, in full, on their website.
