So when I was about 13, I wanted to be in an all girl grunge band – this was the decade of wearing oversized flannel shirts, white tanks, and baggy jeans (and I’m talking about the girls). My generation was first learning about Nirvana, Sublime, Alice in Chains, and, and, and – while actually understanding and appreciating their contributions to the world. My parents did not understand why I needed to blast my music as loud as possible (so I could really feel it), and why I needed to wear black nail polish (I was making a statement…er, sort of). Ah – the nineties.
So when I heard the first note of “More Stuff” by the Dead Exs, I was hooked. All those warm and fuzzy memories of middle school came rushing back. But, I’m more mature now (kind of) and so is the music. The Dead Exs mixes grunge, rock and roll, and blues and adds a hint of that southern twang that tingles your spine. Not sure where the southern twang comes from, since this duo – David Pattillo and Wylie Wirth – comes from New York City, but whatever.
Pattillo and Wirth are no newcomers; they have toured extensively around Europe with a number of shoegaze bands and throughout the U.S. Pattillo producer creds include artists like Alanis Morissette, The Black Crowes and the Beastie Boys. And Wirth has been a professional drummer for over 20 years, playing in a number of side projects. The two actually came together, serendipitously, when they had somewhat of a jam session on Wirth’s birthday. I would have loved to be there, I bet their jam sessions are just as awesome as their songs. In “Nolita Strut” you feel like you’re in the studio with them listening to them just hammering it out, no need for lyrics, you just go with it.
Their debut album, Resurrection isn’t coming out until March 22nd, but if you can’t wait that long, you can stream the full album on their bandcamp page.
