[Introducing] – The Ruffled Feathers

Horns: gotta love ‘em. The Ruffled Feathers are a Vancouver based folk/chamber-pop group who get good use out of them, never better than on “Blueprints For Our Failed Revolution”. It may open with a gentle piano part and accompanying vocal that sounds like it could use a little bolstering, but soon enough some horns and marching drums join in, growing to a rousing chorus with full band vocals.

The Ruffled Feathers set themselves a target of creating a cinematic music video for under $500, and the result is surprisingly ambitious, a visual recreation of the song’s rallying message that shows the band being a little mischievous. Horns are sounded and beacons are lit – it seems we’re going to war. But the climax isn’t battle: it’s a party, a celebratory dance around a burning piano. Revelling in victory or persevering through failure? Either way, it sure looks fun [check out what a good time the drummer is having at 3:27. Love it.]

“Blueprints” is a standalone release, but The Ruffled Feathers have a little more material in the form of an EP called “Lost Cities”, released last year. Though nothing on it reaches quite the same heights as “Blueprints”, “Paloma” comes close with a similar model of softly softly vocals before the whole band joins in for the chorus. You can download the whole EP via the bandcamp link, and their latest single below.
