[Introducing] – White Laces

White Laces

I’m sometimes amazed at the music that I hear. Scrabbling through the inbox you can be presented with bands that have been around for years touting their latest EP, download or YouTube vid.  They seem to keep plugging but never get anywhere and when you listen to them you realise why – they sound like they only started playing their instruments last week.

Then you stumble across a band like White Laces from Richmond VA. Incredibly they only came together less than a year ago but sound more self-assured then those other bands I was talking about. They started out as a bedroom recording project at the mansion/squat affectionately referred to as the ‘Unicorn Manor’ (I’m sure there’s a story about that somewhere).

About a month later the four members – Landis, Jimmy, Jay and Alex put together some tracks in time to get some live experience with Wild Nothing and Eternal Summers.

Selling their stuff well on cassettes (love that!) they drove to Boston to record a self-titled EP which was released earlier this year. With some help from Kevin Micka of the band Animal Hospital they’ve created a mix of live garage-style instrumentation with subtle samples, loops, and archaic synthesizers.  At times it’s reminiscent of Doves or Kasabian, at others you can see why they’ve been compared to bands like Pavement and Sonic Youth.

My favourite track on the EP is “Honeywood” which is why I’ve included it for you here but check out the full EP from Whole Ghost/Shdwply or on their Bandcamp page (where you can get a limited edition 12″ vinyl) because this is a band that is going to be well worth keeping up with.
