YOUAREHERE are a trio based out of Rome, Italy and London, who delve into some pretty serene, life-affirming betcha-didn’t-even-know-this-was-a-dance-tracks, while maintaining a pretty heaviness. Musicians Andrea Di Carlo, Patrizio Piastra and Claudio Del Proposto each bring a unique element from their former bands (French Teen Idol, edPorth and micro, respectively), namely the vocals and morph-friendly percussion.
Their debut “As When The Fall Leaves Trees” has every element that I’d like an album like this to have: spatial, yet constrained in that the songs are pretty simple, not abundant in layering. They let you drift to their wallpaper quality, while also somehow staying true to their inherent danceability. Underneath it all, I’d call this a dance record that doesn’t answer to one genre. It’s got a Mogwai post-rock infinity, downtempo grooves that Boards of Canada might be proud of, plus every so often, they throw in nice airy, falsetto vocals. You know the parts that made M83 M83? If you miss that from their pop singles of late, YOUAREHERE are bringing it back.
It’s never been clearer to me how aligned and alike all those genres are. This music makes zero in on what’s going on outside of yourself, in the song structure itself and relative to where you physically are. Bear with me here, but it’s like staring at the sky and noticing a pattern in the vastness that bleeds together, when suddenly a plane flies by and you are aware of the thing relative to the other things and you are really there. Is this what infinity sounds like?
The track “Asyndeton” is a piece of beauty heavily reminiscent of IDM and the like of the early 90s. The buildup fuzz that clears softly to a deep thumping that is barely contained in my ribcage. This is the kind of stuff euphoria is made of.
Their debut album “As When The Fall Leaves Trees” was just released a couple weeks ago. Lucky for you, you can listen AND download the entire thing for absolutely nothing on their website. I always said I should have been born in Italy. I can’t give these guys any higher of an endorsement.
