[Introduction] – Yes Please!

If you handed me a map and told me to point to Finland I could do that with relative ease (thanks to a pricey liberal arts education), it’s that little country that looks sort of like a demonic claw that borders Sweden and Russia. Okay, first off what the hell does this have to do with listening to music (as the name of the site implies)? Well, to answer that question, Yes Please! is a genre-less band that calls this relatively cursory country its home.

The band is composed of vocalist/guitarist Mikael, backing vocalist/guitarist Teppo, and bassist/backing vocalist and Max on drums. They are straight outta Espoo, Helinski, if you were wondering. The band formed in 2003 and have often found themselves practicing in Max’s grandmother’s kitchen and were heavily influenced by sunny “British indie” with “Dark Wave Pop.”

Now, if I were threatened with bodily harm from some crazed music fan wondering what category I would place these guys in, then I would say, “don’t hurt me” first.  Then I would calmly explain to them that Yes Please! definitely falls somewhere within the confines of that huge umbrella of a genre we all know as Post-Punk. Sounding like a combination of The Killers, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Flaming Lips they are amongst a unique yet familiar genealogy.

However, at other times they manage to stray into experimental shoegaze territory, like a Deerhunter-meets-Animal Collective type of combination. The sounds are colorful, tribal, and psychedelic. Monstrous walls of noise with wavy hazy guitar lines and tribal drum beats. Yes Please! manages to take the “familiar” and meld into something distinguishable from the over-saturated and bureaucratic Post-Punk moniker.
