So far 2011 has featured a couple of instances where record labels and MC’s haven’t seen eye to eye. Everybody from Lupe Fiasco to 50 Cent seems to be having problems with pop music-obsessed executives.
LA resident and rapper Blu, who is supposedly getting trouble from Warner Brothers, treated his hometown fans to copies of his new album, “No York!”, last Saturday during the Rock the Bells Festival. Hopefully, positive word of mouth from fans will convince Warner Brothers that Blu knows what he is doing and doesn’t have to alter his sound to appeal to a more commercial audience.
Highlights on the album include the gloriously chaotic “Everything Ok” and “Doin’ Something.” Streaming and downloading the album is all well and good, but make sure to buy and support the work of Johnson Barnes when “No York!” is properly released, and there’s also his video for “My Sunshine”.
