There’s been much talk about this album, almost all of which is in agreement that Robin Pecknold and crew have not only spurned another fantastic album, but that it’s better than their stellar self-titled debut album.
Personally I’m still on the fence about that, but I am in agreement that “Helplessness Blues” is fantastic, from the melodies, the all-encompassing 12-part harmonies, the storytelling, the lyrics (you might not find a better written album all year), and the songcraft make for a truly special listen. Fleet Foxes seem to have that effect though, the way they can bring a song together is nothing short of spectacular, it’s all so lush and crisp and earthy. Let’s call it happy, contemplative, summer field music….in that you can drag your wind-up turntable out into a field, prop your back up against a tree, give it a few spins and regard life and relationships in a new light.
Or the tranquility of it might just lull you to sleep, but regardless of its effect on you one thing is undeniable. This is an album of the year contender, without a doubt. Thanks to NPR (who else?) you can hear the entire thing below and then take a trip out to your local record store and buy it on wax next week.
