There’s been a lot of talk of Ryan Adams‘ new album “Ashes & Fire” in the run-up to its release, from the way it was recorded (straight to tape, old-school-like) to the influences on it, to the people who made it happen (it was produced by Glyn Johns and has Norah Jones guesting on seven of the songs).
What speaks more than anything else is the music itself, and true to Ryan Adams‘ work on albums from yesteryear such as “Heartbreaker” and “Gold”, it’s a damn fine album. He doesn’t break new ground, or discover an unheard sound, or go off in an avant garde direction with hoovers and face paint, though, and tracks like “Invisible Riverside”, “Dirty Rain”, and “Lucky Now” are a testament to that.
No, he does what he knows best and that’s making gorgeous acoustic, Alt-Country bourbon-drinking gems, and for two weeks before it’s released on October 11th you can listen to it in full below thanks to NPR.
