It was close to this time last year when Sleigh Bells released their highly-anticipated debut album and they’d announced a few days prior that NPR would have the stream of it.
These days everything leaks days, weeks, and sometimes months before the it’s actually released, but with Sleigh Bells no leak had materialised, so when it came time for NPR to stream it there were thousands of people all sitting around at midnight waiting for the stream to drop so they could hear it. The same thing would’ve likely happened with The Antlers‘ second album “Burst Apart” had they announced that NPR would have the stream of it, but they didn’t. They must know we like surprises.
“Burst Apart” hasn’t leaked yet, it comes out in two weeks, and chances are you’ve only heard two, maybe three songs from the album, so knowing that you’re listening to an album below that (at the time of writing) not that many people have heard yet shouldn’t be taken for granted. Building on the grand and epic nature of their debut album “Hospice”, they’ve taken “Burst Apart” to higher ground, seemingly so high that not many other bands can reach their rapturous emotion, balling it up into tiny little slivers of bursting light.
Having not given my first listen the much-needed attention it deserves, I know I’ve missed a bunch and so I recommend you slap on a pair of headphones, turn off the lights, and have someone tape your fingers to your knees to prevent you from doing anything but listening to the album. Out on May 10th, you can listen to it below or get your wallet out and put down some cash for one of the various incarnations of the physical release (get the one with the pet tag!)
