It feels like remarkably little time since Pinemarten dropped his debut album – certainly, I wasn’t expecting a new EP so soon. “Here It Is” might only clock in at three tracks, but kudos to Martyn on the quick turnaround all the same. Maybe I underestimated him: this is a guy who dropped three EPs and an LP in one year, without really setting a foot wrong in the process.
He remains as mysterious as ever, although I was happy to hear that as on the album, he’s included some vocals. The general feel of “Here It Is” follows on pretty logically from where “If You Thought There Was Any Doubt” left off – slightly slower and mellower than his earlier EPs. Not that they were pushing into happy hardcore territory, mind you.
Overall, it’s a solid set of songs that should appeal to chillwave and retro-electro fans everywhere (There are still some chillwave fans, right?). A good start to the year, and if 2011 was anything to go by, that’s us just 1/6th of the way through what we can expect.
