“Is David Bowie Dying?” Sure, he is steadily marching toward the grim reaper, as are we all, but we have no reason to believe that Bowie is heading toward the light any time soon. If anyone is tapped into some great cosmic power that might reveal Bowie’s demise, though, it would certainly be Wayne Coyne, psych-pop’s reigning elder statesman. And it appears he has tapped a successor of sorts: Alan Palomo of, *gasp*, chillwavers Neon Indian.
Under Coyne’s tutelage, it appears that Neon Indian is moving beyond the rapidly dying chillwave moniker, instead setting his controls for the heart of the sun. After all, their collaboration “Is David Bowie Dying?” sounds like nothing if not a modern-era Pink Floyd. Certain elements of the Flaming Lips arise here and there, but this collaboration eschews the Lips’ and Neon Indian’s identities for something ‘greater.’ To his credit, Neon Indian’s influence keeps the track from going too far down the rabbit hole, as parts of the Lips’ “Embryonic” did, making this collaboration a truly symbiotic relationship.
“Is David Bowie Dying?” was released on very limited edition vinyl earlier this week and is apparently already sold out. It is a shame that more of us won’t be able to hold this amazing slice of vinyl, but at least we have a soundtrack to ponder Mr. Bowie’s current health concerns.
