Everybody needs a bit more gloom-laden gothic country melancholia in their lives. Or so I keep telling people. Howling Bells are one of my go-to “bands more people ought to listen to”, and they supply exactly that. Their latest offering is the title track from their upcoming album, “The Loudest Engine”, released on the 12th of September on Cooking Vinyl.
For me, they’ll probably never equal the searing brilliance of “Setting Sun” again, but it’s a good demonstration of their expansive and lyrical take on the blues. Juanita Stein’s delayed vocal swoops are just as enchanting as ever (what can I say – she’s an officially-certified Sexiest Woman of Rock), and there’s an incessant feel to the track that certainly fits with the fact that it – along with most of the album – was written on the road.
If you’re a fan of Grinderman or Giant Drag, or just fancy a blood-letting at sundown (yes, that was the first thing that came to mind), give “The Loudest Engine” a listen. Together we can make Howling Bells my go-to “band an appropriately large number of people listen to and love”.
