The Horrors second album was not only one of the biggest surprises for me in 2009, but it ended up being pretty much my favourite album of that year. The way the went from being a band who wore their garage influences on their sleeve and annoyed me a little bit to being a fully functional krautrock band providing some of the best moods and textures I’d heard on record for ages was astounding.
I knew that they pretty much had their new album ready to go, but when Zane Lowe announced on his show that he had the lead single and was going to be playing it tonight, I nearly popped a gasket in the excitement centre of my brain.
I certainly wasn’t disappointed, it’s a top tune. Singer Faris Badwan said that it was the first song they worked on when they got back together for the new album, and they must have been so excited to have this epic beast to be the first thing they came up with. It’s a bit of an anthem, not something I would have expected from The Horrors, but it totally works. It’s the first single off the new album, “Skying”, which is released on July 11th.
