[Listen] – New Song By Two Inch Punch – “Up In Your Mix”

It’s a seminal moment for me. My first ever post on Listen Before You Buy, all the way back in April(!), was about a young chap called Ben Ash, better known as Two Inch Punch. “Love You Up” blew me away back then – no doubt helped by the fact that I was moving to a new city at the time, and itching for sounds to accompany me – and it still does. Since then, I’ve been checking back regularly to see if anything new from young Master Ben had surfaced, but nothing had. In fact, two tracks actually disappeared from his Soundcloud.

Still, as many a Guinness advert has taught me, good things come to those who wait (other lessons include that white horses are actual horses, and that snail racing is a popular and surprisingly frenetic hobby in Cuba). Yesterday, along came 1) a new track, “Up In Your Mix”; and 2) the announcement of an EP, “Love You Up”, released on the 31st October by PMR Records.

Like “Love You Up”, “Up In Your Mix” takes the basic building blocks of dubstep, but actually does something with them other than wobble a bass filter for five minutes. It didn’t, for me, have quite the immediate appeal of the former, but the production is deliciously spacious. The strongest comparison is still James Blake, although oddly it also put me in mind of Timbaland – not someone we feature a lot on here, admittedly. Maybe it’s just that I’m 90% sure the weird, crackly, vocal-pop percussion is a sample from “Cry Me A River”.

Anyway, great to hear more from TIP, and great to finally have a release date for an actual EP. I am excited. Frankly, Ben can get up in my mix any time he likes.
