It’s not much of a secret that Youth Lagoon‘s Trevor Powers is on the verge of being the most relevant aspect of indie music to come along this year. His debut album “The Year Of Hibernation“” comes out on the 27th and I’m nearly as excited about picking it up as I was for “Tomboy” so that should speak for the level I put him on.
The best thing Powers has done, outside of locking himself in his room and creating this amazing artwork, was choosing to sign with Fat Possum Records (Yuck, Smith Westerns, Adam Green, The Black Keys, Band Of Horses etc), which is the most consistent label around for delivering quality bands and then promoting them according to their strengths rather than using some rote format like other similar labels (Sub-pop, Saddlecreek, Secretly Canadian). Where some bands need hype and people to buy into the greatness of rock and all its glory, there are others though that need one hundred percent unabated word of mouth street cred.
Youth Lagoon falls into the later category, so over the past few months it has been one slow leak at a time with no forward pushing build-up. Almost as if his songs were that virus in 28days Later it has spread at first slowly from one person to another, “hey check this kid out,” now within weeks he will practically be the third element in some holy indie trinity; PBR, American Spirtis, and now Youth Lagoon.
At the beginning of this month the video for “Montana“ came out which is incredible and now just a few short days before Hibernation’s release the final piece to the buzz puzzle is being put into place with “Bobby”.
If for some reason you are not yet a believer give this song three minutes of your life and listen to it, if that doesn’t do it for you I hear Nickleback’s working on their greatest hits album so at least you’ve got something to get excited about.
