[Listen] – Two New Songs By Arcade Fire – “Speaking In Tongues” & “Culture War”

It was almost exactly a year to the day when Arcade Fire started dropping some 12″ vinyl singles in record stores across the world, much to the surprise of everyone. People were cropping up online posting pictures of this vinyl that wasn’t announced by the band, something that shoppers were finding randomly littered amongst other vinyls in their local shop.

That was “The Suburbs”/”Month Of May”, the first new music from the band in three years since 2007′s “Neon Bible”. From that point on, 2010 was Arcade Fire’s year, blowing the fuck up all over the shop, winning awards, having a trillion-selling album, headlining numerous festivals, and saving the world too. Oh, and they confused the hell out of anyone who hadn’t heard their name in the last ten years when they won a Grammy for album of the year.

Now they’re readying a deluxe version of that album “The Suburbs” (out June 27th) as well as a Spike Jonze-directed film called “Scenes From The Suburbs” including two previously unreleased/unheard/unknown tracks. Tonight Zane Lowe had the world premiere of both songs and below you can hear radio rips of both of them, “Speaking In Tongues” featuring Talking Heads’ David Byrne, and “Culture War”.

I love Speaking In Tongues. One of those songs that you just fall in love with instantly. Brilliant.

This band has been uninspired and over-rated since funeral (which is one of my favorite albums of all time, and a “modern indie” epic). Everything sounds the same… and bland. Same drab tempo, same monotonous melodies. Guess that’s why they’re selling soo many records these days. meh.

  Couldn’t disagree more. While more dense musically than the sweeping epic Funeral, The Suburbs is a rewarding great melancholic album. Maybe give it another listen?

    Totally agree with Duder…As a working musician/songwriter, there’s no doubt in my mind that AF’s songwriting has steadily declined since Funeral and their EP, which were their two most well-crafted works.
    
    I’m SOOO sick of hearing from all these stuck-up hipsters who think that all this minimalistic, “layered” material is the future of music, and that anyone who disagrees with them is intolerantly stuck in the Stone Age.
    
    No, we don’t have to give it another listen to magically discover that you’re actually right…. To someone who values and appreciates good songwriting, and isn’t just going along with fasionable music trends, this extremely overrated album’s simply not as good as their early work.

      You might want to look up the definitions of ‘opinion’ and ‘fact’.
      
      After you do that, look up the words, ‘objective’ and ‘subjective’.
      
      Take what you’ve learned, and apply them to your comments about music.
      
      Then go back and realize how ridiculous you were being when you were saying that something “simply isn’t as good as”, etc., implying that your personal opinion on an album or piece of music is ‘correct’, and because someone disagrees with you, that they are ‘wrong’.
      
      It’s the epitome of snobbery. Stop embarrassing yourself. With such a wrong-headed approach to music, your ‘songwriting’ must be pretty one-dimensional.

        Ok this may be overkill, but Adam, your statement is at least as ridiculous as ry’s. Really, when you say that making an objective statement regarding art is the ‘epitome of snobbery,’ you seem to be classifying art as completely subjective, or impossible to measure according to any standard. If this is true, then we may as well throw out the past 2500 years of artistic theory, which has spent most of its time trying to find this objective standard, and while we’re at it, we might as well admit that if someone thinks Justin Bieber is beautiful art, then their opinion is just as valid as someone who has spent their life studying classical music. Thing is, opinion is what we have, and we’d better trust it means something.

I’ve listened to “The Suburbs” For a solid year now -meaning I haven’t grown tired of it. However, there are some very valid points being made. Yes, ‘The Suburbs’ doesn’t live up to ‘Funeral’, ( which brings me to tears just because there’s so much emotion poured into that record) but is a an amazing edition for them – and their fans. I’ll agree that it doesn’t contain all the melodic ear candies that past records have, but the lyrics and the meaning behind why Win wrote is astounding. Am I mad that they won a grammy? Yes. Am I mad that their album artwork was on a freaking Apple commercial? YES. But they, especially he, always inspire me and Arcade Fire was the first Indie Band I ever listened too. Maybe it seems that they are musically going downhill because they are starting to get recognition, or maybe because they really are. All I’m saying is that You can’t base them on your arbitrary opinions- They know what real music is. And I’m down for anyone who doesn’t sing about relationships for all ten songs ( In Arcade Fire’s 16) or release a single every month..*Cough Cough* Vampire Weekend.

some of you are waaay to critical of music. there’s a lot of crap out there but arcade fire isnt producing any of it. lighten up and realize some of you arent the almighty god when it comes to critiquing music. id much rather listen to anything arcade fire makes than bono or my chemical romance.

It’s Ok no need for fuss, they just reached their peak early and you can expect another two albums before break up, only one if they still have some self-respect over money.
