Another recent signing to the newly created label Forest Family Records is Gauntlet Hair, who now share the label with “Cults”, the excellent new Indie-Soul duo from San Diego.
Gauntlet Hair are two BFFs (Andy and Craig) from Lafayette, Colorado who’ve been making music together since they were 15 and it shows, their sound is tight and well-honed, bringing echo and reverb ten-fold and mixing it up with Animal Collective layers and The Jesus and Mary Chain vocals.
On their MySpace page they explain their somewhat strange band name:
“The words Gauntlet Hair were first handed to my ear by a gentleman that worked at one of my favorite vintage shops in Chicago. I saw this beat-up copy of a Johnny Winter album for sale. On the back of it were several pictures of him in this crazy medieval garb with an insane looking bowl-cut? It was a dollar so I walked up to the counter to pay. The owner of the shop looks and it and says, “Oh Johnny Winter, this guy’s a freak, he has that gauntlet hair.” I had never heard those two words put together before and they were in such a great context of expression. I thought gauntlet hair equals freak, an oddity, cool. I took the album home and told Craig about what had transpired. The words resonated with the both of us. Since we had known each other our hairstyles were equally as intense along with our sense of fashion. We were constantly ridiculed over it throughout high school. It became a sort of bonding term of endearment between us. Gauntlet Hair is our own term for freedom of expression.
