In this day & age it’s pretty unusual to find a genre that sounds totally new or different, but I’ve certainly felt that with my modest introduction to the world of chiptune (bitpop, chiprock, 8bit, whatever the hell it’s called).
Crystal Castles give a taste into that glitchy world but it certainly isn’t the focus of their music in the same way that it is for Anamanaguchi. The familiar beeps and boops of their music provides a brand of childhood nostalgia not readily available in a lot of music. However, to cut my little trip down memory lane short, these weird NES and GameBoy sounds are hardly enough to carry a band’s whole sound. It’s the driving guitars and drums that give the band a more identifiably musical sound. They’re an instrumental punk band, but one willing to experiment with a different type of noise. And this, I think, makes for a very interesting (and infectiously catchy) sound.
Their EP “Power Supply” and album “Dawn Metropolis” are powerhouses of the chiptune genre so check ‘em out if you’re interested in a sassy solution to every gamer’s quandary; how can I listen to the awesome tetris song without it just being plain weird? ANAMANAGUCHI, (fun to say, fun to listen to), is the answer.
