The Beastie Boys are back. Actually, I’m not sure if they ever went anywhere. They were probably just playing cards in the basement or something.
Anyways, here’s a fresh track called “Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win” featuring Santigold, which you can find on the Beastie Boys latest album, Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 (Part 1 was delayed and/or abandoned after Adam “MCA” Yauch was diagnosed with cancer).
It’s a lot of fun, and definitely a deviance from the simple hip-hop that the Boys made their name with. As far as I can guess, other than trying to have some fun with buzz artist Santigold (or Santogold, as she first spelled it), this is an attempt by the rap trio to remain relevant in the download generation.
The original dub style track was released on the B Boys’ Soundcloud two months ago, but it hits party mode with this remix by Major Lazer. I like this remix, even though it begins with the omnipresent airhorn blast that DJs from all genres continue to think is relevant. Note to any such DJs: it’s tired, dudes. Find something else to tag a track with. Also, I can’t get over how low the Beastie Boys verses are mixed in both incarnations. Again, a major deviation from the Beastie Boys I grew up with.
Major Lazer softens the track in the newest electronic trend, adding a moombahton vibe to it. I can’t decide whether the original or the remix is more fun, so I’ll leave it to you to pass judgment.
